While many think of the Great American Songbook as individual, classic, popular songs created between 1920-1960, teams of collaborators produced innovative and appealing musical theater productions that are the backbone of the American Songbook. Lorenze Hart; Jerome Kern and Oscar Hammerstein; and Rodgers and Hammerstein created shows whose subjects and musical styles are as fresh to audiences today as when they were created. This class examines the evolution of Broadway musicals, whose themes introduce a variety of cultural settings and unique dramatic styles.
