Mark Wilde-Ramsing held a staff archaeologist position with the North Carolina Division of Archives and History/Underwater Archaeology Branch from 1978 until retiring as director in 2012. He led investigations along many miles of the coastline, examining sites ranging from dugout canoes to 20th-century steamers. From 1997 to 2012, he supervised investigations of one of the most significant underwater discoveries in recent times, the pirate Blackbeard’s Queen Anne’s Revenge.
