Archaeology in the Lower Cape Fear

This course explores the archaeology of the Lower Cape Fear region, from pre-colonial times through the 20th century. The focus is on specific archaeological sites that illustrate how archaeologists interpret their digs and tell a larger story about the past. Artifacts are presented to help participants visualize and connect to previous eras. 

Nora Reber is a professor of anthropology at UNCW and received her Ph.D. from Harvard University. Her digs in the Lower Cape Fear region focus primarily on the archaeology of enslaved people, poor workers and farmers in Brunswick County. Her book, An Archaeologist’s Guide to Organic Residues in Pottery, was published in 2022.
