How do birds spark the imagination? How do the arts inform our connections to birds? How does the science of birds figure in artistic representations? Such questions may arise as the class explores Helen Macdonald’s memoir, H Is for Hawk. Bird expert Jill Peleuses helps us understand hawk biology and behavior, while wildlife artists Deb Williams and Sabine Baeckmann share how birds inform their work.

Barbara Waxman was an English professor at UNCW for 32 years. She taught courses in the memoir, multicultural American literature, food writing and literature by women. Jill Peleuses is an avid birder, owner of Wild Bird and Garden and co-founder of the Cape Fear Bird Observatory.
