The Black Loyalists were African descendants who sided with the British Crown during the American Revolutionary War in return for the promise of a free life. Some were enslaved and some were freed people of color; all longed for the freedom to live their lives. Some 3,000 Black Loyalists and their families were evacuated from New York to Nova Scotia, Canada. By 1787, many had resettled in Freetown, Sierra Leone, Africa and afterward to the United Kingdom. This lecture journeys with the Black Loyalists on their quest for freedom and gets to know their descendants, who continue to reside in places of resettlement.
