Join us to explore the origins of agriculture, especially pre-industrial mixed-species planting systems that harness symbiotic relationships among plants. The most well-known of these groupings is the three sisters, which combines beans, corn and squash. This class explores lesser-known combinations and early processes of plant domestication, and considers the potential role of symbiotic gardening in sustainable agricultural practices.
Eric Britt Moore is an associate professor of environmental protection at UNCW. He directs the UNCW Environmental Soil Science Laboratory. Gabriella de Souza is a consumer horticulture agent and Extension Master Gardener Program Coordinator with NC Cooperative Extension, New Hanover County. Wayne Hoffman is trained as a behavioral ecologist and has worked on projects dedicated to birds, sea mammals, sea turtles and forests.
