Amanda Boomershine. UNCW Spanish professor and leader of the Latino Alliance of Southeastern North Carolina discusses immigration policy in the United States, including changes that we have seen since 2005. She focuses on how changes in federal and state immigration policies are impacting communities, especially in North Carolina.
Feb. 18 How Artificial Intelligence (AI) Changes Modern Warfare
Raymonde Kleinberg, professor and chair of the UNCW Department of Public and International Affairs, introduces the use of autonomous weapon systems and asks how AI has changed the parameters of modern warfare. She analyzes how these modern weapons systems have transformed international humanitarian law and addresses the legal and ethical concerns raised by AI in warfare.
March 4 Winning the Fight Against Fraud
E. Renee Sanders-Lawson, retired college professor, AARP advocate and K-12 administrator, discusses how to recognize the warning signs of scams. She advises that caution builds confidence and knowledge creates a stronger and safer community.
March 18 Designing Community Projects That Help Sustain the Eradication of Malaria in Uganda
Michelle Cathorall, UNCW professor of public health, describes her work in Uganda to eliminate malaria by working hand in hand with communities. She shares how that work leads to innovative, culturally relevant and sustainable solutions to public health and development challenges.
April 1 Springtime Birds and Everyday Residents
Jill Peleuses, owner of Wild Bird and Garden and co-founder of the Cape Fear Bird Observatory, explains how the geographical location and habitat of the Cape Fear region drives birds to migrate, stopover and nest. She gives a better understanding of a local resident, the Eastern Bluebird, and the dynamic migrant, the Painted Bunting, our area's most colorful songbird. She offers tips on seeing and attracting these birds.
April 15 Public Media at a Crossroads: Challenges and Opportunities in a Shifting Landscape
Mary Bradley, WHQR public media development director, considers the importance of public radio, its role within the community and our nation, and how it is faring considering the loss of federal funding. She is joined by Kevin Crane, WHQR station manager and previous CEO at Nashville Public Television, who explains similar issues in the work of public television.
