This class examines graphic novels as a visual literary format that goes beyond superhero stories. We discuss four graphic novels: Maus I: A Survivor’s Tale: My Father Bleeds History, by Art Spiegelman about his father’s Holocaust experiences; March – Book One, a first-hand account of the U.S. civil rights movement by John Lewis and Andrew Ayden; Persepolis: The Story of an Iranian Childhood by Marjane Satrapi; and They Called Us Enemy, a memoir of George Takei’s childhood as a Japanese American imprisoned in a U.S. internment camp in WWII. Students are expected to read the novels and be prepared to discuss them in class.
