« back to classes page

Earth has a history of devastating impacts from asteroid and comet collisions. As recently as 1908, an impact over Siberia flattened 830 square miles. Some 66 million years ago, an asteroid wiped out the dinosaurs and most of life on Earth. In this lecture, learn how NASA identifies and tracks threats and what can be done if an asteroid is headed our way. You also learn how to join NASA from your home computer to watch live as objects lurk in outer space.

Alan Rich has been a spokesperson for NASA through the JPL Solar System Ambassador program since 2001. He is also a facilitating scientist for technology spin-offs from Mars exploration to the field of diagnostic medicine.
