Examining Bias through Playreading

ID : 2614

« back to classes page

This course features readings of Lorraine Hansberry’s 1959 play, A Raisin in the Sun, and Lynn Nottage’s 2014 play, Sweat, as avenues into a discussion of societal biases. No acting experience is required, only a clear, fairly loud reading voice, as well as a willingness to express oneself in a non-threatening environment. Participants share roles during each play, and time is set aside for open discourse.

Rick Leighton has been involved in education since the 1970s and has taught at all levels from kindergarten through graduate school, as well as at three different OLLI communities. His background in facilitating group discussions and his lifelong connections with theatre have prepared him to lead playreading/discussion courses like this with understanding and success.
