Mythologies of the Sea

« back to classes page

For seafaring societies, the ocean is both a rich source of gifts, and a place where humans encounter the alien, deadly and unknown. We explore mythic deities and monsters, seascapes and islands, and voyages and encounters, from three diverse cultures: Ancient Greek, Norse and Maori. Finally, we investigate our own tales of the ocean’s mystery, from ghost ships to the Bermuda Triangle and beyond.

Andrea Deagon grew up on world myths and legends and got her Ph.D. in classical studies in 1984. She taught mythology and classics at UNCW for 34 years. She has lived in Greece and New Zealand, appreciating living with three very different oceans.
