Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) programs have recently been the focus of widespread discussion and controversy. This course offers a civic-minded exploration of the origins and purpose of these programs, beginning with the history of race and racism in the United States and the legacy of the Civil Rights movement. We’ll look at how efforts to promote equity have evolved over time and clarify what DEI programs aim to achieve. Through this lens, we’ll consider what is at stake for communities and institutions when such initiatives are challenged or misunderstood.

Daniel Wegener is a retired educator and administrator with experience in Arizona, Central America and with the United Nations. His degree in anthropology and his international career in education spurred his deep interest in social justice.
