“The world is a book, and those who do not travel, read just one page.” – St. Augustine
Sessions in this series are led by passionate voyagers who share their journeys to faraway (and perhaps not so faraway) lands—perfect for armchair travelers or seasoned globetrotters looking for their next adventure.
Sept. 12 Visiting Dangerous Places
Al Davis, retired entrepreneur and professor and traveler to 99 countries shares experiences from three relatively dangerous adventures: living 6 weeks in war-ravaged Jos, Nigeria; spending 10 days in Kashmir, a region fought over by India, Pakistan, and China; and being overnight guests of headhunters in Indonesia. This presentation touches on the culture, environment and history of these places, describes problems we encountered and features lots of photos.
Sept. 26 Peru & Ecuador
Join Robert “Bob” Shapiro, MD, Susan Williams, MPA and other members of the OLLI community on an epic visit to Peru and Ecuador offering a breathtaking journey through diverse landscapes, from the lush Amazon rainforest to the majestic Andes, the Sacred Valley of the Incas and the ancient ruins of Machu Picchu to the unique wildlife of the Galápagos Islands. View their photos of these vibrant cultures, unusual local cuisines and unforgettable adventures.
Oct 10. Odd Animal Encounters
Al Davis shares his and his wife’s incredible experiences while encountering some interesting animals up close: orangutans in Kalimantan, Komodo dragons on Rinca Island and mountain gorillas of Rwanda. This presentation includes many photos and discusses the background of the species, their environments, what we did and problems we encountered.
Oct 24. Morocco Adventures
Al Davis and Bob Shapiro have both visited Morocco recently. Come with us as we reflect on our common (and sometimes divergent) views of this spectacular and diverse country, where everybody loves cats; where burqinis and Brazilian bikinis appear side by side on beaches; and where the indigenous people (Berbers) thrive, speak their original language and represent half the population.
Nov 7. Solvitur Ambulando (“it is solved by walking")
Camino de Santiago is an ancient pilgrimage route that traverses 500 miles across Spain. It culminates at the cathedral in Santiago de Compostela in Galicia, where it is believed the remains of apostle St. James rest. Over the years, thousands of pilgrims have walked this path, and experienced its transformative power. Join Beth Baldiga, RN, and Chris Brown, CAPT USN (ret), in learning more about and viewing scenes from their multiple walks along "The Way."
Nov 21. Bicycling Adventures in Europe and Asia
If you have been hesitant about signing up for a bike tour, attend this session with Yvonne Bailey, JD. She presents slides of cycling trips to the Netherlands and Belgium; Slovenia, Italy & Austria; and Vietnam & Cambodia. While Bailey is not an expert on the countries, she shares what she saw learned from native tour guides. She also discusses what to expect on a bike tour. After all, bicycles go places where no tour buses can fit – like the top of the wall surrounding Angkor Wat!
