Oct. 13: The Art of Collage: Panel Discussion
This series opens with a panel of three regional collage artists who share their work and participate in a discussion of this eclectic art form. Jeffery Geller and Irina Shin-Geller are lifelong artists, art collectors and owners of the Red Springs Art Space Gallery in Red Springs, NC. Over the last several years, Jeffrey Geller has worked in ceramics, collage and montage. Irina Shin-Geller has focused on special collage papers from the Far East. Our third panelist is Lois Watson, an award-winning collage artist, who uses her own and others’ handmade paper for coastal birds and botanicals. Her work can be found in Gallery Citrine.
Oct. 20: Ekphrastic Poetry: Art inspired Art!
Published local poet Joanne Durham will lead us through an exploration of how responding to art in writing helps us more deeply engage with it and can lead us to discoveries. We read and discuss some poems by contemporary poets who were inspired by works of art and draft some poems of our own. Durham is the author of To Drink from a Wider Bowl, winner of the Sinclair Poetry Prize (Evening Street Press 2022) and a chapbook, On Shifting Shoals? (Kelsay Books 2023). Many of her award-winning poems were inspired by art, leading her to study ekphrastic poetry and teach workshops about it online and in person.
Oct. 27: The Art of Photography
We welcome two esteemed Wilmington art photographers: Curtis Krueger and Wm. Fridrich. Krueger, a professional photographer for over 30 years, is fascinated by the way different materials, tools and processes affect a picture. He is known for his stunning nature photography and quirky perspective on the world. Fridrich’s work is influenced by DADA and surrealist artists, including Marcel Duchamp and Man Ray. Fridrich studied art, sculpture and photography at UCLA, worked for motorcycle magazines and in the U.S. Army as a combat illustrator. He then launched a successful graphic design career in the early 1970s. He shows his work at the Art in Bloom Gallery.
