Reading the Galapagos Islands

« back to classes page

About 1,000 km off the coast of Ecuador, the Galápagos Islands are home to rare plant and animal species that inspired Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution in 1835. Humans have continued to record their personal and scientific experiences, allowing us to explore the islands through Margret Wittmer‘s memoir, Floreana (first published in the author’s native German in 1959), Pulitzer Prize winner Jonathan Weiner’s The Beak of the Finch (1994) and  Kurt Vonnegut’s novel, Galápagos (1985).
