This interactive course focuses on events leading to the United States’ involvement in Vietnam, culminating in a war with over two million casualties. We discuss the French colonial era, the rise of Ho Chi Minh and the Viet Minh, South Vietnamese politics and U.S. policy decisions. We examine the conduct of the war, with an emphasis on tactical decisions. We also consider the experiences of Americans on the ground, in the air, at sea and on the rivers.
