A joint American/British project to decrypt Soviet intelligence traffic from World War II known as the Venona project, resulted in the unmasking of dozens of Soviet agents in the U.S. and the UK, including the notorious “atom spies.” But accounts of the project are littered with contradictions, distortions and unjustified boasts about the decryption process. Antony Percy discusses both the project and the suppression of facts that have prevented a proper history of the events from being told.
