This course offers an overview of global infectious diseases, covering the characteristics of different types of pathogens (viruses, bacteria, fungi and parasites) and exploring the broader picture of disease spread within populations. We discuss the role that environmental factors and human behavior play in transmission, the impact infectious diseases have on human health and our wider society, and the treatments and interventions available. Learn more about a microscopic world that has huge global impacts.

Abagael Sykes is an academic researcher specializing in the analysis and modeling of infectious disease outbreaks. Her current research as a postdoc at UNC Chapel Hill focuses on developing modeling methods for situations where there is limited data about an outbreak.
