Travel writing is one of the oldest and most alive literary forms, encompassing personal essay, journalism, memoir and cultural criticism. In this course, we read celebrated practitioners of the craft and write our own work, exploring how to render a place vividly, navigate the ethics of writing about others and find deeper meaning beneath the surface of any journey.
Raised on a Pennsylvania farm near Lake Erie, Rhonda Waterhouse developed a deep connection to land and water. She earned an MFA in creative nonfiction with an environmental focus from UNCW, where she now teaches. Waterhouse is also a freelance environmental journalist whose work has appeared in Black Warrior Review, American Submariner, Coastal Review and storySouth, among others.
