In turn-of-the-century America, the Gilded Age represented a massive industrial and economic boom. Culturally, the artistic output consisted of masterpieces in portraiture and realism, mirroring societal disparities. Painting was inspired by the European masters and was led by John Singer Sargent, Mary Cassatt and the Hudson River School, reflecting contemporary concepts and foreshadowing the modernist aesthetic.
