Living well as older adults means paying special attention to fundamental areas of our lives: the pillars of aging. Our speakers address each of these areas to help us turn awareness into action.

Nov. 4      Financial Fitness
Trevor Yates, a financial advisor with Edward Jones, discusses how to manage financial resources wisely. He explains how early planning can contribute to fulfillment as we age.

Nov. 11   Occupation and Purpose
Tina Newsham, professor and coordinator of the gerontology program at UNCW, discusses how a sense of purpose plays a significant role in our well-being. She describes a variety of sources of purpose and shares opportunities to engage in the local community that allow older adults to apply existing skills and develop new ones.

Nov. 18   Physical Fitness and Home Safety
Tamatha Arms, Ph.D., professor at the UNCW School of Nursing, discusses balance and fall prevention in relation to sensory systems and confidence. Britney Melvin, community risk reduction coordinator at the New Hanover County Fire Rescue, helps participants turn awareness into action by identifying everyday fire risks at home and learning how small changes can make a big impact.

Dec. 2     Expressing Spirituality
This session welcomes four panelists to reflect on consciousness, manifestations of spirituality and points of intersection between the two. We are joined by Catherine Ibsen, Ph.D., who leads Bhavana Community; Rabbi Robert Waxman, who served as spiritual leader of Bnai Israel Congregation for 34 years; Michael Werner, a past president of the American Humanist Society; and Paul Wilkes, M.A., a journalist, writer and documentarian who has written extensively about spirituality and religion.

 Dec. 9 Social Engagement
Susan Katz, life plan consultant, and Marci Sherman, director of living well, both at Porters Neck Village, discuss how social engagement and meaningful relationships support healthy aging. They review current research, explore models for aging with purpose in communal settings and are joined by residents who offer their perspectives. In addition, Mary Rudyk, M.D., shares how to build a community of support, purpose, and connection right where you live.

Dec. 16 Intellectual Stimulation: WHQR Is Not Just the News
WHQR, the Cape Fear’s only community-funded public radio station, offers much more than the news. Station Manager Kevin Crane, Development Director Mary Bradley and Music Director and Classical Host Pat Marriott discuss the station’s varied offerings and activities both on the airwaves and in person. WHQR is a hub for connection and intellectual stimulation, designed to entertain and enlarge community members’ knowledge of the world around us.
