Journey to the fictional region of Wessex, the setting for Thomas Hardy’s Wessex Tales. Originally published in magazines, the stories are set against a backdrop of unforgiving rural landscapes, market towns and rigid social structures. Hardy’s characters scratch out temporary joys in an environment that echoes the Victorian milieu in which the author wrote.Students should come prepared to discuss the stories—this is a participatory course! Enrollment is limited.  Note: The book is not provided.

Alan Sturrock holds degrees from Harvard University and Duke University, and has taught in Scotland, Argentina and the U.S. Since arriving in Wilmington, Sturrock has been an OLLI student, volunteer, facilitator and instructor. He is currently chair of the OLLI at UNCW Advisory Council
