This class explores the Jewish experience of expulsion, diaspora and integration into new communities. Starting with the Jewish return to Madrid during the era of Miguel de Cervantes, we pivot to Michael Gordon’s current project, “The Men of Carver: Mr. O and the Welding Class of 1973.” The project and library exhibit centers on the story of Aaron Ostrofsky, a Jewish immigrant, World War II veteran and union leader during McCarthyism. The lecture offers a nuanced reflection on the Jewish experience across multiple countries and distinct eras.
Michael Gordon is an associate professor of Spanish at UNCW, where he teaches master’s seminars on Don Quixote and undergraduate courses on Spanish Golden Age literature and civilization.
