Discover the vibrant world of marine life found on submerged surfaces during this 2.5-hour lab-based program at the UNCW Center for Marine Science. You will examine samples of the?fouling community—organisms that attach to docks and pilings. Using microscopes and instructor-led investigation, you’ll identify common species and explore how abiotic factors such as salinity, temperature, and water quality influence these communities. This indoor experience emphasizes close observation, scientific interpretation, and a deeper understanding of coastal ecosystems. No fieldwork or prior experience is required.
